Kilbourne Hole in south-central New Mexico (Figure 1) is a vintage illustration of a maar crater (Figure 2) that formed as a consequence of the explosive conversation of hot basaltic magma with groundwater throughout an eruption that is volcanic. Once the steam-saturated eruption line that types during an explosive occasion gravitationally collapses, a ring-shaped rise travels radially outward across the ground from the vent.
